French Painter, 1836-1902 French painter, printmaker and enamellist. He grew up in a port, an experience reflected in his later paintings set on board ship. He moved to Paris c. 1856 and became a pupil of Louis Lamothe and Hippolyte Flandrin. He made his Salon d?but in 1859 and continued to exhibit there successfully until he went to London in 1871. His early paintings exemplify Romantic obsessions with the Middle Ages, while works such as the Meeting of Faust and Marguerite (exh. Salon 1861; Paris. Mus. d'Orsay) and Marguerite at the Ramparts (1861; untraced, see Wentworth, 1984, pl. 8) show the influence of the Belgian painter Baron Henri Leys. In the mid-1860s Tissot abandoned these tendencies in favour of contemporary subjects, sometimes with a humorous intent, as in Two Sisters (exh. Salon 1864; Paris, Louvre) and Beating the Retreat in the Tuileries Gardens (exh. Salon 1868; priv. col., see Wentworth, 1984, pl. 45). The painting Young Ladies Looking at Japanese Objects (exh. Salon 1869; priv. col., see Wentworth, 1984, pl. 59) testifies to his interest in things Oriental, and Picnic (exh. Salon 1869; priv. col., see 1984 exh. cat., fig. 27), in which he delved into the period of the Directoire, is perhaps influenced by the Goncourt brothers. ottilia adelborg
Eva Ottilia Adelborg, född 6 december 1855 i Karlskrona, död 19 mars 1936, var en svensk akvarellkonstnär. Hon var dotter till kommendörkapten Bror Jacob Adelborg och hans hustru Hedvig Catharina af Uhr samt syster till Gertrud Adelborg. Adelborg var "bilderbokskonstnärinna" enligt äldre benämning. Hon benämns idag barnboksillustratör, men illustrerade även böcker för vuxna, komponerade tapetmönster och skrev böcker och kan därför benämnas författare. Bosatt i Gagnef i Dalarna från juli 1903, då hon startade en skola för knyppling. Museum över hennes liv och verksamhet finns i Gagnefs gamla prostgård. Känd för bland annat affischen "Prinsarnes blomsteralfabet" (1892). Det litterära Ottilia Adelborg-priset instiftades år 2000 av Gagnefs kommun.

Ercole de Roberti
Ferrara ca 1451/56-1496 was an Italian artist of the Early Renaissance and the School of Ferrara. He was profiled in Vasari's Le Vite delle pi?? eccellenti pittori, scultori, ed architettori. The son of the doorkeeper at the Este castle, Ercole later held the position of court artist for the Este family in Ferrara. According to Vasari: Ercole had an extraordinary love of wine, and his frequent drunkenness did much to shorten his life, which he had enjoyed without any accident up to the age of forty, when he was smitten one day by apoplexy, which made an end of him in a short time. Paintings by Ercole are rare.
